Out of surgery, battling arrhythmia

Riley is out of surgery and in the PICU. From a surgical perspective, everything seems to have been a success. Riley did end up needing to be on bypass for about 40 minutes. He received 300cc of blood.

Shortly after coming out Riley developed arrhythmia and his heart rate shot up to 175 bpm with a low blood pressure. His extremities are extremely blue, bluer than we've ever seen them. This seems to be a byproduct of the arrhythmia. He was given additional blood products and his BP came up to normal. The docs are now giving him amiodarone to try to stop the arrhythmia. It needs to be given slowly because it can lower his blood pressure. This might sound familiar to those of you who remember those bleak hours after the Fontan when Riley had severe arrhythmia, crashed, and ended up on ECMO. Hopefully that will not happen again and we'll see improvement over the next hour as the amiodarone takes effect.

Unfortunately Riley's arterial line in his groin went bad and the doctors had to put a new one in under his left armpit. He also has a venous line in his neck at the jugular. Finally, he has three chest tubes. Riley is still asleep but periodically opening his eyes and looking around.

It's so horrible to think of him with all those tubes, let's hope they're out sooner rather than later. Everything is crossed for a speedy return to normal arythmia wise. We're thinking of you.
We love you

I know there's nothing to say to make any of you feel better. I'm so thankful that the surgery went well and I hope they get Riley's arrhythmia under control. I'm thinking positive thoughts that Riley's lines and chest tubes (Cassidy always called them "snakes") will be out soon and he will be back home where he belongs.

lots of love,

keeping an eye out....
