To our surprise--and everyone else's--the narrowing of Riley's hepatic vein connection is no longer there. The narrowing was seen on images that were taken after Riley's Fontan. At the time, the narrowing was not considered a big deal because everything else looked great. However, since there is so little know about what causes PLE, when it comes into the picture, doctors try to address every potential issue. It is unclear why the narrowing is gone. Anyway, he left the cath lab without any stents. One less procedure; one less foreign body lodged into Riley's anatomy.
The catheterization showed that all of Riley's hemodynamics (pressures, flow) look great. We were told that his Fontan is working very well. An arterial line was placed in his groin (opposite his PICC line) for surgery. Riley is the first case Wednesday and will hopefully wake up from his cath sedation tonight with enough time to eat something before midnight. He is allowed solid food until midnight and only clear fluids until five am.

Wow, things have really picked up in pace! I'm glad to hear that, although I know none of this is what you want Riley to be going through. That's wonderful that he didn't need a stent, too! What a shocker! When you say his pressures looked great, does that mean they are low? My understanding of PLE (and I was just asking Cassidy's cardiologist, whom she saw today) is that it is most often caused by high venous pressures. I was wondering if the docs there at UCSF have talked with you about Riley's pressures and what they're like. Anyway, I just wanted you to know (again) that Riley and your entire family are in our thoughts and will be especially tomorrow.
take care,
Gwynne
