Happy holidays; and we're walking

Riley is officially walking! He now likes to walk on his own pretty much everywhere. It has been a great Christmas present for Grampy, Grammy, Auntie Karen and Grandma Gail, all of whom were in town to witness it.

Ready to toddle!

After a two-and-a-half-week hiatus, Riley made huge strides (literally) yesterday!! He took a couple of steps three or four times in a row at a friends house, and then when Ken got home, Riley was ready to show off to Dad!! I stood him up facing me and I had to quickly keep backing up so he could keep coming towards me (Ken counted 10 steps)!!! I backed into the wall, and that was that. Amazing!! I guess he officially needs a pair of shoes.

All better

Riley seems fully recovered from his four-day fever. He has tons of energy and is eating constantly -- must be trying to make up for four days without food.

Four-day fever

Riley has had a low-grade fever (hovering just about 100 degrees) since Sunday. He has not been eating and has lost nearly a pound. He saw his pediatrician on Tuesday and Dr. Bernstein looked at his ears and throat and listened to his chest and said it's likely just a virus. There isn't much we can do, except let him rest and try and get him to drink plenty of fluids. Thankfully he's still nursing, so he has been getting some nutrition from Mom. We've been giving Riley Tylenol to lower his fever. He seems to be a perking up a bit today, thankfully, and he did have some breakfast. So, hopefully his appetite is coming back and he'll be feeling better soon.

Two steps!!!

You heard it here first!! Riley took two (2) steps this morning at Central Park in San Mateo before gracefully tipping forward to land on his hands. His buddy Matthew and mom Lisa witnessed the exciting event! Riley wasn't willing to reenact the accomplishment for Dad just yet, but hopefully he'll get braver and the steps will be more frequent.

Riley and Dad visit Hiller Aircraft Museum

Riley visited the Hiller Aircraft Museum in San Carlos today. He had a lot of fun looking at the historic airplanes, sitting in a 747 cockpit and watching the planes take off and land at the San Carlos Airport.

Synagis begins

Riley received his first synagis shot of the season today. He will get this shot every month for the next five or six months to protect him against RSV, a common respiratory virus that could be deadly because of his asplenia.

Riley also received his flu shot about two weeks ago. Doctors recommended that Ken and I get the flu shot as well (which we did) because of Riley's compromised immune system. Even though Riley has been vaccinated, it could be dangerous for him to be exposed to the flu.

In other news, Riley has been very interested in walking with his walking toy and anytime he can grab onto our fingers. He still has a lot of work to do with his balance, but he is gaining confidence. He no longer has regularly scheduled physical therapy appointments, but I will remain in contact with the therapist he saw at Kaiser as well as the folks at the Golden Gate Regional Center, just to continue monitoring his progress.

Here is a link to tons of recent pictures of Riley getting into everything, as well as him enjoying Halloween trick-or-treating!! Enjoy.

First visit to Buffalo

Riley joins Mom for his first visit to Buffalo and his first opportunity to meet numerous friends and family, including Great Grandma Galante. From there, they'll head to New Jersey and Philadelphia for a brief stay with the Norton relatives, including a chance to meet his other great-grandparent, Great-Grandmom Norton. Mom and Riley will be back in the Bay Area on October 5th, not a moment too soon for Dad who misses everyone.
