Riley's PICC line went in today into a vein in his groin. He was sedated with Ketamine, Versed, and Morphine. He was "asleep" during the procedure and we're grateful the line did not end up in his neck like last year. The old IV was removed.
Following the PICC line procedure, Riley had an echo. The valve does not appear to be worse than previous echos that Riley has had. The MRI will be able to measure definitively how leaky the valve is. The MRI is scheduled for Tuesday at 2:30 PM. We'll hopefully know afterwards if Dr. Karl will attempt to repair it during surgery.
- If the Fenestration surgery does not include valve repair, Riley will not have to go on the heart-lung bypass machine during surgery. This would be much less stressful on his system and means recovery will (hopefully) be quicker.
- If the Fenestration surgery includes valve repair (or replacement), Riley will have to be on the heart-lung bypass machine during surgery. This would be a much more complicated surgery and recovery will likely be longer.
- Dr. Tarnoff estimated that surgery could be as early as Thursday or Friday of this week. However, a UCSF cardiologist seemed surprised that it could take place that soon. She gave us the impression that he could not have surgery if the effusions were still present. The fluid pockets have shrunk as a result of the massive doses of diuretics and limited fluid intake, but they are still there.
- Riley received two more doses of albumen today.
- We are waiting to hear the results of the second stool sample. The first results confirmed last Wednesday Riley is suffering from protein-losing enteropathy (PLE).
Hopefully we'll have more information tomorrow on what exactly will be done during surgery and when surgery will likely take place. In the meantime, Carter is extremely out of sorts. In addition to fighting the ear infections, upper respiratory infection, and eye infections, his sleep schedule is totally out of whack. He is so exhausted at the end of the day that he cries and flails about his crib for more than a hour before finally falling asleep.

Fingers and everything else crossed for a quick surgery without the bypass and a swift recovery. We're thinking of you - give our love to the big guy. And if you need Carter to have a base at our house please just shout.
All our love

I am sorry Riley is facing another surgery. I know we all hope not to be there again.
I hope the valve is judged okay and you can avoid bypass.
My heart baby (Wren) is also ill like Carter. He has a cough, cold and eye infections. Frost (5) has caught the eye infections too so we are all squirting stuff hither and thither.
I am wishing for things to go smoothly tomorrow. This too shall pass.

Hi there you guys - wow I was surprised to hear that this is all happening. My heart is with you all and I just wish I could be closer to visit you in the hospital, or make you a meal...We will pray that this can be done with out going on bypass. I will be checking up on the blog. If you want to call just to talk or cry - please do! And Suzanne, remember to rest....
We put a note onto Bravehearts so there are lots of people thinking and praying for him. And my little Carter will say a special prayer for Riley - whenever I tell him about one of his heart buddies in the hospital his heart is tender - he knows!...Lots of hugs, Jana
Let's all hope for the best. Grammy is on her way to help out too. See my email. Cannot wait! Give Riley and Carter hugs for us.

Hi Everyone,
We are all praying for you guys and hope Riley's procedures are as easy and simple as possible---given the situation.
We'll pray that no valve repair is needed and that, in any event, the surgery and recovery go smoothly.
I'm thinking of you guys and wishing you the best possible outcome for surgery. It's hard to believe they might do it this week. Also hoping Carter gets back to being healthy and happy again soon.
